WSF is proud to bring Battle of the Books back to LUSD!  This amazing program is free and open to all 3rd through 8th graders currently enrolled at an LUSD school.

 

The event is simple!  Form a team, read through your grade-level group book list, and come prepared to answer questions about the books!  Questions are always asked in a manner that require the title of the book and author as the answer.  Depending on the size of the groups, there are multiple rounds culminating in a final battle of the top teams to determine the winner for each grade-level group.

 

The competition day will be Saturday, March 18th.  The format and location will be determined based on the number of participants in each grade-level group.  Details will be announced after registration closes on February 10th but participants should plan to be available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until details can be worked out.  If you cannot be available for that entire time, do not register for the event.

 

Teams consist of three to five students in the same grade group -- 3rd and 4th graders can team up, 5th and 6th graders can be on the same team, and 7th and 8th graders can join forces.  The teams are not school based.  Team members can also come from different schools — one member can be from Wicklund, two from Lammersville, and one from Cordes, for example. Teams are encouraged to get creative and have fun — we'd love to see some team posters, signs, t-shirts, or costumes for the big day!

We need you! The success of this event relies very heavily on the generous donation of time from parents, teachers, and community members. We need volunteers on the day of the event to serve as moderators, facilitators, and judges. We also need help with check-in before each session. We will need approximately 80 volunteers over the course of the day. Please consider volunteering — volunteer registration will be open at the end of February, once registration is closed and session times are determined.

There are 20 books on each grade-level list (3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, and 7th & 8th). Your child doesn’t need to read all of the books but the more they read, the better!  Registration closes on February 10th, 2023. Happy Reading! Check out the book list now.
